Job Description
Storyhouse is delighted to be seeking a Youth Theatre Director to work with our Youth Theatre participants aged 5-17.
The Youth Theatre Director will lead on the design of the Youth Theatre curriculum, facilitating the groups during their weekly skills sessions and directing the groups in performances on our Storyhouse stages. The Director will also be responsible for communicating with parents, supporting pastoral needs of the young people and mentoring the Assistants in each group.
The role will be based at Storyhouse, Chester and will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure criminal records check through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
This is a fixed term contract until July 2025, with the possibility of extension. Working hours are 15 per week, to include evenings and weekends.
Interviews will take place at Storyhouse on Tuesday 20 August. This role will start W/C 2 September for planning and team meetings, with Youth Theatre sessions beginning W/C 16 September.
We are looking for our Youth Theatre Director to work with groups on the following days and times:
Mondays
8-10s group: 4.30pm - 6pm
14-17s group: 6.15pm - 8.15pm
Tuesdays
5-7s group: 4.30pm - 6.00pm
11-13s group: 6.15pm - 8.15pm
The remaining hours worked will be for planning and team meetings. This will be hybrid, both working from home and in the office.
As much as possible, we integrate the Youth Theatre in events at Storyhouse, taking them to watch shows and offering mini-performance opportunities in our building.
Job Requirements
Including, but not limited to:
Experience designing, delivering and evaluating drama, and creative workshops for young people aged 5-17
Experience directing or assistant directing young people in large and small scale productions
Experience working with a consistent group of young people for a sustained amount of time
Experience collaborating with other facilitators and sharing plans
Experience motivating and supporting young people
Experience working with a diverse range of young people and supporting any access requirements
Experience working on co-created projects
Passion for working with children & young people from a range of backgrounds and with a breadth or needs, experiences and abilities
Ability to work as a team, in collaboration with both staff and young people
Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with a range of people and ages
Organised and able to manage several groups and projects at once
Knowledge of safeguarding & child protection
Job Responsibilities
Including, but not limited to:
Design & deliver a Youth Theatre curriculum, offering fun, engaging and creative drama and performance workshops for a range of children aged 5-17
Collaborate with the other Youth Theatre Director to ensure that the curriculum remains consistent
Direct the Youth Theatre productions on the Storyhouse main stage and Garret Theatre
Work with the Children & Young People Programme Manager and Assistant Producer on the production and ideas for performance opportunities throughout the year
Attend production meetings and liaise with the technical team
Mentor and support Youth Theatre Assistants in sessions to ensure they are developing their skills and feel supported
Work with the Pastoral Support Lead to identify any young people who may benefit from further support during their sessions
Ensure Youth Theatre is accessible for a range of young people from a variety of backgrounds
Ensure that Storyhouse safeguarding policies and procedures are adhered to
